Challenges about Budgeting and Grocery Shopping

Budgeting and grocery shopping is one of the best ways to trim down your monthly expenses and daily spending- but there are dozens of challenges out there- especially the advice that is ultimately unrealistic. Here is a list of budgeting and grocery shopping challenges and how you can make them realistic strategies to save on grocery shopping! Challenges about Budgeting and Grocery Shopping Challenge #1- Unrealistic Research I've spent a lot of time scouring Pinterest and have not felt entirely satisfied with the results. Some articles seem too unreasonable to be applicable. More often than not, it comes down to unrealistic costs of groceries . For example, I cannot find 1 gallon of milk at my local Walmart for $1. And our Dollar Tree out in Montana doesn't have a grocery section- we do have a freezer section, but it is only 2-3 doors of frozen dinners. And our bread and produce is not as cheap as the other articles. What I have done to get around this challeng

Make Textbook Shopping Easier: Happy Hunting!

Erasing pencil marks, pulling out sticky tabs, and scouring the community or various websites to find the best deal! Sound familiar? That’s because it’s time to find or sell textbooks for the next semester.

For those you have yet to set off to college, be sure to keep reading! There are plenty of resources literally at your fingertips! Below is a list of Apps, websites and strategies I use when I go looking for a textbook or am looking to declutter last semester's library.

Free Apps:

  • Chegg
  • Barnes & Noble
  • Cash4Books
  • TextBookMe
  • Amazon
  • Kindle Previewer

Just SCAN or ENTER in the textbook barcode or ISBN and see the prices flow!

‘Amaz-ing’ Deals:

Use your Laptop for a Library!

BUY OR RENT digital copies of the textbooks you need and keep it all in one place. The Kindle Previewer is an exceptional tool for opting out of buying physical textbooks. This is available as a website and an App for mobile devices such as the iPad, iPod, iPhones or Android and Samsung products.
Taking Shakespeare in the Spring? Grab a list from your professor when the semester starts and you can find most Shakespeare titles for FREE or for smaller prices such as 99cents- that is quite a deal when physical copies are found at my college bookstore for $4 each.

Ready to Sell?

Bid your time appropriately. This is a great time to use those Economics Skills for Supply and Demand! As we get closer to the first day of the spring semester, the price of your textbooks will also increase. Watch for the prices on Amazon.com and try your best to click on the Sell Back for a GiftCard button at the right time. The amount will be added to your online account and you can use this for a later time to purchase other textbooks, school supplies or various products.

Beware the Amazon Prime

Sometimes Amazon Prime is a great deal and you can get your textbooks shipped to you for free! I really do love Amazon, it is one of the first websites I go to for a new book!
However, there are some products for your classes that you can buy WITHOUT the use of PRIME. There have been times, when my results show that I can buy a book for $10 or less, and only pay a small fee for shipping and handling and it turns out to be a cheaper total when compared to the same product being sold with Prime shipping. Just keep your eyes open!

Beware the Access Code

There have been some cases when buying the 6-month Access code for some classes is cheaper to buy separately and here’s why! in the FVCC bookstore or on Amazon.com, there are some books that include the access code and there are some cases that don’t.
If you are a student who prefers a digital copy of the textbook LISTEN UP! For those classes that need the access code, it is likely that there will be a digital copy of the textbook included in the 6-month access. These tools are usually available because they are easily accessible as you are also doing the assignments. These classes require the Access Codes for homework and quizzes because they are typically math, science and social science courses and they cost anywhere from $150 to $300 or more. What is possible, is to forego the physical textbook altogether and just buy the Access Code (which is often cheaper than the book that has the Access Code included).

You are ready for your new semester!
